About the event
Have you ever taken a second look at your pine or juniper bonsai and wondered about how to improve its appearance? Maybe the foliage is an undesirable type, or, out of scale with your tree? Or, maybe your bonsai is missing a branch in a key area, and you would like one there? Grafting is an ideal way of correcting these problems. It is an invaluable cultivation practice used throughout Japan and China for improving the quality of bonsai. With this invaluable technique, our guest artist, Peter Keane will show you the proper way to graft your bonsai with the side-veneer (scion) method to ensure a successful result. In this six and a half hour workshop (including a lunch break), Peter will begin with a brief (30-45 minute) lecture on the science and art of grafting, followed by aiding students in grafting their trees.
Students are expected to provide a bonsai to be grafted, along with scion material, grafting tape, buddy tape, sealer paste, and grafting knives. This is a hands on workshop where Peter will prepare and demonstrate the proper method of grafting one scion to each student's tree, followed by students proceeding to finish their own trees.
Peter Keane has practiced the art of bonsai for over twenty years and has specialized in grafting bonsai using a variety of techniques for fifteen years. Peter has taught clubs throughout New England, New York, and New Jersey. Over the years, Peter has shown several of his bonsai masterpieces at the U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition held in Rochester, NY.
Workshop is limited to ten participants for maximum attention. Peter is also available for private bonsai work, if so desired
